Nine Surinamese prison guards traveled to Maryland at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy from March 3-7. The group participated in an “Overview of Correctional Management Study Tour” conducted by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions at the Central Maryland Correctional Facility in Sykesville, Maryland.
The training is part of a long term project whose goal is to strengthen the management and security of Suriname’s prison system. This includes training for prison staff in general prison control techniques, improved contraband control, and more effective supervision methods for prison staff.
The prison guard training program is part of our work with Suriname to improve citizen safety.
This project links to the goals of the Caribbean Basic Security Initiative, the program through which the United States works with the nations of the Caribbean to reduce illicit trafficking, increase public safety, and promote social justice.
