Message to U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Paramaribo

Location: Suriname

Event:  Paramaribo Road Closures on December 20, 2023.

The final ruling in the December Murders Trial’s criminal appeal, potentially including sentencing of former Military Dictator/President Desi Bouterse, is expected on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, starting at approximately 9:00 AM. The Surinamese police will close downtown streets around the area of the courthouse (Cantonal Court on Monseigneur Wulfingh Straat) including Independence Square (“Onafhankelijksplein”). Businesses in the downtown core may opt to close for the day, and increased police patrols and checkpoints may be present in other areas around Paramaribo.

The U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo recommends individuals stay away from the courthouse and Independence Square areas, consider alternate routes, and follow all traffic rules and regulations.
