Message to U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Paramaribo

Location: Suriname

Event: Kerkplein to Independence Square Demonstration on November 9, 2023.

The Surinamese Police Force (KPS) has reported that the Central Labor Union, consisting of teachers, nurses, and bank employees will hold a protest march today, November 9th beginning at 9 AM in the vicinity of the downtown area. KPS is expecting approximately 1000 people to participate. No road closures have been reported at this time, but that is subject to change. It is expected to take the following route:

  • Kerkplein (in front of Burger King)
  • to Noorderkerstraat
  • Right on Henk Arronstraat
  • Finish Independence Square.

The U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo recommends individuals avoid the area, consider alternate routes, and follow all traffic rules and regulations.
