Message to U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Paramaribo

Location: Suriname

Event: Independence Square Demonstration on November 3, 2023.

The U.S Embassy in Paramaribo is aware of several events occurring Friday, November 3rd with expected police presence (KPS):

9:00 AM: The Central Labor Organization Union is holding a protest on Verlengde Gemenelandsweg to protest the 5% increased value added tax on fuel and government utilities.

4:00 PM: A peace walk in solidarity with Palestine will start at Kerkplein near Burger King, and end at the National Assembly building near Independence Square. Although no road closures have been reported, KPS confirmed that police will be present along the walking route:
• Start at Kerkplein (near Burger King)
• Noorderkerkstraat
• Henck Arronstraat
• End at National Assembly (near Independence Square).

5:00 PM: The commencement of the Annual Savanna Car Rally will be taking place at Independence Square. The following are road closures, starting at 5:00pm:
• Kleine Watertsraat
• Van Roseveltkade/Grote Combeweg

KPS anticipates large crowds. The U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo recommends individuals avoid the area, consider alternate routes, and follow all traffic rules and regulations.
