Event: Paramaribo Street Closures

The Surinamese Police Force (KPS) announced several road closures in the city in conjunction with Phagwa celebrations, a performance by popular Dutch artist, Frenna, and the Vice President of Suriname’s birthday.  Areas are expected to be both highly trafficked and populated.  There will be a heavy police and private security presence in the downtown area.

The affected areas are:

Independence Square Phagwa Celebration/Frenna Show – Road closures starting March 7th from 4:00 AM to Wednesday March 8th at 1:00 AM:

  • Kleine Dwars/ Sommelsdijckstraat
  • Kleine Combeweg/Roseveltkade
  • Arronstraat/ Grote Combeweg
  • Watermolen/ Lim A Po Straat
  • Henk Arron/Mgr. Wulfingstraat

Lustig Phagwa Celebration – Road closures starting March 7th from 6:00 PM to March 8th 2:00 PM:

  • Roseveltkade/ Kleine Combe
  • Helstone/H.J. De Vriesstraat
  • Cornelis Jongbow/Hertogstraat

Vice President’ birthday party and election campaign kick-off at Andre Kamperveen stadium – Road closures starting March 7th from 10:00 AM to March 8th at 6:00 PM:

  • Arronstraat/Derbystraat
  • Schietbaanweg/ Collilaan/Letitia Vriesdelaan

The U.S. Embassy recommends personnel avoid protest areas, consider alternate routes, follow all traffic rules and regulations, and follow the direction of local law enforcement.
